So, I Wrote for the Oscars?!

Home / blog / So, I Wrote for the Oscars?!

At the the top of the year Janelle Monáe’s team hit me up and asked if I could help write her Oscars opening. First I made sure I wasn’t being trolled, emphatically agreed, signed approximately 100 non-disclosure agreements and then spent the next few weeks face-timing with Janelle and sending voice notes of myself squeaking out “Oscars Come Alive.”

While I pray those voice memos are never made public, you should absolutely watch Janelle’s EPIC Oscars opening. It’s phenomenal from start to finish and I still can’t believe I played any role in it’s greatness.

Thank you, Janelle! Check out our pictures and watch her incredible performance below!

Thank you @janellemonae & the entire Wondaland team, for giving me the opportunity to be part of your historic #Oscars night! As a long time fan last night was truly a dream come true. I started making hairstyle tutorial videos way back in 2006 because I couldn’t find anyone that looked like me to help me style my locs. Then I started writing sketches & song parodies because I wanted to be an actress but no one wanted to hire me. The internet gave me a place to be my authentic self & make the content I wanted to see in the world. I never could’ve imagined the life & career I have today but DAMNIT I AM HERE and it feels so good. This journey has been WILD to say the least, but I didn’t get here by myself. I’m blessed to have so many amazing people cheering & rocking with me! Thank you thank you! 🙏🏾🥰 *swipe* for some bts Oscar moments along with some vintage Chescalocs 😭
